Free Lung Cancer Screening Now Available at Xplore Radiology

Early detection saves lives—are you eligible?

Lung cancer is Australia’s deadliest cancer. But here’s the hopeful news: up to 70% of lung cancers can now be detected early with a low-dose CT scan, dramatically improving outcomes. In fact, early detection through screening has been shown to reduce lung cancer mortality by 20%.

That’s why Xplore Radiology is proud to be part of the new National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP)—a vital, government-backed initiative helping Australians at higher risk catch lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

Through our partnership with Lungscreen Australia, we’re delivering free, high-quality lung screening services across our network of locations in NSW and beyond.

Who’s eligible for free lung cancer screening?

You may qualify for free screening if you:

  • Are aged between 50 and 70 years
  • Have a history of heavy smoking (around 30 pack-years or more)
  • Currently smoke or quit within the past 10 years

If you’re not sure how your history stacks up, your GP can help assess your eligibility.

This screening uses low-dose CT (LDCT) to check your lungs for signs of cancer—long before symptoms appear. It’s safe, quick, and non-invasive, with no needles and no downtime.

Why early detection matters

Lung cancer often develops quietly, without noticeable symptoms until it’s advanced. That’s why so many Australians are diagnosed too late for effective treatment.

But when caught early?

  • 70% of lung cancers can be picked up through a CT scan
  • 65% of early-stage lung cancers can be successfully treated
  • There’s a 20% reduction in mortality when caught early via screening

Screening could literally save your life—or the life of someone you love.

What to expect at your appointment

Once you’re referred by your GP, your low-dose CT scan will be performed at one of our Xplore Radiology locations. The scan itself only takes a few minutes.

You’ll lie on a padded table that gently moves through the CT scanner—completely pain-free. Our radiologists then review the images to look for any abnormalities. Your results will be sent to your GP to discuss next steps, if needed.

There’s no cost for eligible patients and no need to prepare—just show up to your appointment.

FAQs

What is the National Lung Cancer Screening Program?
It’s a free, government-funded program that uses low-dose CT scans to detect lung cancer early in people who are at higher risk. The goal is to reduce deaths by catching lung cancer before symptoms appear.
How often can I get screened through the program?
Eligible people can receive a free lung scan every two years as part of the program, provided they continue to meet the eligibility criteria. Your GP will help guide your screening schedule.
What is a pack-year, and how is it calculated?
A pack-year is a way of measuring long-term smoking history. One pack-year equals smoking 20 cigarettes (one pack) a day for one year. For example, smoking one pack a day for 30 years equals 30 pack-years.
Is the scan safe and accurate?
Yes. The program uses low-dose CT (LDCT), which exposes you to a much lower dose of radiation than a regular CT. It’s a safe, fast and highly accurate way to detect lung cancer early—before symptoms appear.
