What You Need to Know About Bone Mineral Density Scan

Bone Mineral Density is a measure of the amount of calcium and other minerals in your bones. This test is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that leads to weak and fragile bones. If you are considering having a Bone Mineral Density scan, here is some helpful information about what you can expect.

How a Bone Mineral Density scan works 

A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan uses a CT technology to measure the amount of calcium and other minerals in your bones. It is used to diagnose osteoporosis and helps determine if you are at risk for fractures.

Before the scan, you will need to remove any metal objects from your body. You will then be asked to lie down on the CT scanner and remain still for a few minutes while the machine takes pictures of your bones. The results of the scan will be analysed to measure the density of your bones.

Is it safe?

Bone Mineral Density scans are perfectly safe. The BMD scan is painless and non-invasive. During the procedure,  X-rays are emitted from the CT machine and pass through the lumbar spine and hips to create images of this area of anatomy.

Before undergoing the BMD scan, you will need to inform us if you have any medical conditions that might be impacted by a CT scan, such as if you are pregnant.

What to expect during the scan 

If you haven’t had a CT scan before, it’s helpful to know what you should expect when you enter the scanning facility.  The CT machine is often described as looking like a “donut” with a bed sliding through a circular hole.  Our staff will supply you with a gown to change into, and you will then be asked to lie down on the bed, on top of a white hard board called a calibration phantom. This helps collect the data for the examination. The bed will move during the scan, this is so the machine can accurately capture your images.

The BMD scan usually takes only 5 minutes to perform.  Once it is complete, you will need to wait around 10-15 for the radiographer to receive the scan results.  You will then be able to take your results with you to your next doctor’s appointment.
