    Lung cancer screening is a safe and effective way to detect lung cancer early, when treatment has the best chance of success. At Xplore Radiology, we offer low-dose CT (LDCT) scans as part of the Australian Government’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP).

    What is Lung Cancer Screening?

    Lung cancer screening utilises a low-dose CT scan to capture detailed images of the lungs. Unlike a standard CT, a low-dose scan uses much less radiation and does not require needles or injections.

    Screening is recommended for people at higher risk of lung cancer, such as those aged 50 to 70 years with a significant smoking history.

    What to Expect

    Before Your Scan

    1. Obtain a referral for a low-dose CT scan from your GP.
    2. Book your appointment online, by phone, or in person.
    3. Bring your referral and Medicare card.
    4. Wear comfortable clothing and remove jewellery before the scan.

    During Your Scan

    1. You’ll be asked to lie on the CT bed with your arms above your head.
    2. The scan itself takes about 10 seconds and is completely painless.
    3. No needles or injections are required.

    After Your Scan

    1. A radiologist will review your images and send a report to your doctor.
    2. Your results will also be recorded in the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR).
    3. You may receive a follow-up reminder for your next screening or be referred for further tests if needed.

    You would like to receive a free lung cancer screening. Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions.

    What is the goal of lung cancer screening?

    The aim is to detect lung cancer early, before symptoms develop, when treatment is more effective.

    Who is eligible for FREE lung cancer screening?
    People aged 50–70 years who currently smoke, or have a history of smoking, may be eligible under the NLCSP. Your GP can confirm if you qualify.
    How safe is the scan?
    The low-dose CT scan uses much less radiation than a standard CT and is considered safe for regular monitoring.

    How do I prepare?
    Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid jewellery. No fasting or special preparation is needed.
