Preparing for Your Radiology Appointment
Medical imaging is an invaluable tool in modern healthcare, allowing doctors to diagnose and monitor various health conditions with precision. Whether you are scheduled for an ultrasound or a CT scan, proper preparation is crucial to ensure accurate results and a seamless experience during your radiology appointment.
Ultrasound Scans
An ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of organs, tissues, and blood vessels within the body. During the ultrasound scan, a small handheld device called a transducer is used, which emits sound waves and receives the echoes that bounce back from the internal structures. These echoes are then converted into real-time images displayed on a monitor.
Ultrasound scans are widely used to visualise and evaluate various parts of the body, including the abdomen, pelvis, reproductive organs, heart, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, and joints. It is a non-invasive, painless, and radiation-free procedure, making it safe for people of all ages, including pregnant women and infants.
Ultrasound Preparation
Pelvic and Pregnancy Scans
This examination may be performed internally, externally or both. You may eat normally. Drink 1 litre (5-6 glasses) starting from 90 minutes and ending 30 minutes prior to your appointment. You MUST have a full bladder so do not empty it before your appointment.
Urinary Tract and Prostate Scans
These scans evaluate the urinary system and prostate gland. You will need to fast for 2 hours prior to the appointment. Drink 1 litre (5-6 glasses) starting from 90 minutes and ending 30 minutes prior to your appointment. You MUST have a full bladder so do not empty it before your appointment.
Abdomen and Abdominal Arteries/Doppler
Ultrasound of the abdomen examines abdominal organs, and Doppler studies assess blood flow in abdominal arteries.
You will be asked to fast (nothing to eat or drink) for 8 hours prior to the appointment. This allows the organs to be seen more clearly and is especially important if we are to examine your gallbladder.
Renal Arteries/Doppler
This scan assesses blood flow in the renal arteries. Do not eat food for at least 12 hours before your appointment. You will need to be hydrated, so drink 1-2 glasses of water before your appointment. You may empty your bladder as necessary.
DVT/Leg Doppler
This scan is used to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs. You will need to be hydrated, so drink 2 glasses of water before your appointment. You may empty your bladder as necessary.
CT Scans
A CT scan, also known as a computed tomography scan, is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It provides a comprehensive view of organs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels, allowing healthcare providers to visualise and diagnose various medical conditions with greater precision than traditional X-rays.
During a CT scan, a rotating X-ray machine captures multiple images from different angles, and a computer processes these images to create detailed, three-dimensional cross-sectional views. This enables healthcare professionals to examine internal structures layer by layer, offering invaluable insights into potential health issues.
CT Scan Preparation
Head, Soft Tissues of the Neck, Chest, Abdomen, and Pelvis
Do not eat food for at least 3 hours before your appointment.
Spine and Extremities
There is generally no specific preparation required for spine and extremity CT scans. You may be asked to remove any metal objects or jewellery before the scan.
Angiogram
This scan evaluates blood vessels in specific areas of the body. You will be asked to fast (nothing to eat or drink) for 4 hours prior to the appointment. Inform our staff about any allergies you have.
Cholangiogram
This scan assesses the bile ducts and gallbladder. You will be asked to fast (nothing to eat or drink) for 4 hours prior to the appointment. Inform our staff about any allergies you have.

Inform your healthcare provider and the Xplore Radiology team about any allergies, particularly to iodine or contrast dye. Disclose any relevant medical conditions before the scan to ensure your safety and accurate results.
How long does an ultrasound take?
Most ultrasounds take 30 minutes or less, depending on the region being examined. Some studies are more detailed and take up to 60 minutes.
How long does a CT scan take?
The time taken to complete a CT scan will depend on the examination that has been requested by your referring doctor. CT scans that do not require an injection and are usually quite quick and may be completed in as little as 5 minutes.
Note: If your CT scan requires you to drink contrast for the scan, you will need to arrive up to 1 hour before the examination. We will advise you of this when we confirm your appointment booking.
How do I get my results?
We will send your GP or specialist a written report with your scan results. Please ensure you have made an appointment with your doctor so they can explain the results to you.
